Eduardo Berizzo has been sacked as coach by Athletic Bilbao, with Gaizka Garitano named as his successor. The writing was on the wall for the Argentinian tactician as Monday’s 3-0 defeat to Levante left them winless in 13 games and sitting 18th in the La Liga standings.

Things began well this season with an opening-day victory over Leganes, but eight losses and five draws have followed and the board felt it was time to do something about it.
The 49-year-old took the reins on May 13 but managed only a 13 per cent win-rate during his time at the helm, with Garitano, who has been coaching the club’s youth team, now “responsible for leading the Athletic Club’s first team”, according to a statement.
He has previous first-team managerial experience at Real Valladolid, Eibar and Deportivo La Coruna.
