The Greater Tomorrow Academy product has been in Spain for the last couple of weeks undergoing trials, with a view to joining one of the interested suitors in the January transfer window if he passes the tests with flying colours.

A representative of Samuel Okon said: ‘’Samuel Okon is now training with Sporting Gijon. He first trained with Atlético Madrid when he arrived in Spain and just after three days of training, the coach liked him. He did well in the training games.’’

’’Now, he is practicing with Sporting Gijon, who play in the Segunda Division. Real Oviedo are also interested in him, and have invited him to train with them.

’’Okon has said that he would love to play for Atlético Madrid because they are one of the traditional teams in Spain. He wants to play at the highest level.’’

Red Bull Salzburg, Deportivo de La Coruña, Dinamo Minsk and an unnamed Czech Republic team showed interest in the defender after the 2013 FIFA Under 17 World Cup.

Samuel Okon has said that he will cut short his trials with Sporting Gijon at the end of this week to enable him attend the National Honours Award, which will be held next Monday.
