Global Glory For Belgium

Thomas Pieters believes he and Thomas Detry can grow from their World Cup of Golf victory in Australia. The Belgian duo started the final round five shots clear and showed no signs of nerves on Sunday at Metropolitan Golf Club as, after bogeying the second, they picked up four shots to reach the turn in 33.

Four birdies and three bogeys saw them home in 35 to sign for a 68 and their tally of 23-under was enough to see them to a three-shot victory in Melbourne.

Home favourites Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith mounted a charge, as did the Mexican duo of Abraham Ancer and Roberto Diaz, but they had to settle for a share of second, three shots back.

Defending champions Denmark were tied for fourth, with the English pair of Tyrrell Hatton and Ian Poulter eighth.
The victory was Belgium’s first in the tournament, while for Pieters it was his first triumph since 2016 and also marked Detry’s maiden success at the top level.

Pieters admits the success means a lot to the pair, and feels it will give them the belief to kick on heading into 2019. “It feels very good. It’s been a long time since I won and this feels as good as an individual title. I’m very, very happy,” Pieters said. “We’ll take a lot of confidence out of this. It’s a shame the season’s over for me now.”
