Former England and Essex captain Graham Gooch is concerned Alastair Cook is stagnating as a batsman after another poor summer. Cook is England’s record Test run-scorer, with more than 12,000 to his name, while he has also bagged 32 five-day centuries, but his star has been on the wane for some time.
Without the consistency that was the hallmark of his formative years, the 33-year-old’s place in the side has become under scrutiny, with scores of 13, 0, 21, 29, 17 and 17 in the ongoing series against India.
Big scores such as his double-century in the winter’s Ashes series at Melbourne are now few and far between and there have been calls for the former skipper to be dropped.
It may well be Cook cheats the hangman at the end of the summer and calls time on his international career, and Gooch for one feels there are problems for the Essex man.
“My concern would be watching him that I don’t see any improvements in his game,” he told BBC Radio 4. “I think he’s flat-lining a little bit. When you’re a batsman, you need to improve yourself, you need to look for new things to do to drive you forward.
“I don’t know how he’s practicing and I don’t know what he’s doing away from the game, but I am concerned when I see him play. I think he makes similar mistakes but even at 33 or 34, you can improve yourself.”How To Migrate To Canada Without IELTS - A must read for anyone looking for a better life abroad"....
