The Super Eagles B put up a spirited effort but it was not enough has they were edged 3-2 by recently crowned Europa League champions Atletico Madrid in the GOtv Max Cup at the Godwill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom Stadium on Tuesday.
Atletico paraded stars like Jan Oblak, Juanfran, Thomas Party, Fernando Torres and Kevin Gameiro.
Super Eagles B had the likes of Kelechi and Chidiebere Nwakali, Emem Eduok and Femi Thomas.
Arsenal youngster Nwakali and Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medal winner Usman Mohammed got Nigeria’s goals.
Angel Correa, Fernando Torres and Borja Garces were the scorers for Atletico.
Oblak was the first to be called to action as early as the third minute but produced a brilliant save to prevent Atletico from going behind.
Atletico launched an attack of their own and went close to opening the scoring on eight minute only for Gameiro to see his effort go inches wide.
Atletico carved out another scoring opportunity in the 20th minute, this time through Correa, but his goal bound strike was stopped by Thomas.
The deadlock was eventually broken on 32 minutes through Arsenal youngster Nwakali whose screamer flew past Oblak into the top corner to put the Super Eagles’ B side 1-0 ahead.
Atletico responded a minute later through Correa with a wonderful strike to make it 1-1.
In the 43rd minute, the Super Eagles B should have retaken the lead only for Destiny Ashadi to miss an open net despite good play from Kadiri Samad.
Before the commencement of the second half, Atletico made five changes with Fernando Torres among the players brought on.
Torres almost made an instant impact as he tried a long range effort which Thomas did well enough to stop from going in.
Atletico went close again on 55 minutes but they were denied by Thomas who stopped Gameiro’s effort following a pass from Machin Vitolo.
Atletico’s positive start to the second half eventually paid off as Torres headed in a cross on 64 minutes to put his side 2-1 up.
The Super Eagles side were back on level terms with 10 minutes remaining as substitute Mohammed made it 2-2 after brilliantly beating his marker.
But in the 85th minute Borja restored Atletico’s lead netting the third goal to bring score to 3-2 to Atletico.
