Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is excited by the performance of his team at the International Champions Cup and hopes the impressive showing at the pre-season tournament will serve as confidence booster ahead of the 2017/2018 season.
Guardiola watched his side thump fellow English Premier League title rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee in the early hours of Sunday (Nigerian time).
“I’m so happy for all of them involved,” Guardiola told the media following City's commanding performance.
“Of course, the results are good for confidence and the way we did it, our performance is good.
“I’m so satisfied especially in the last two games (Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur) – no injuries, then we come back home, rest and prepare.”
City played with three defenders at three back but Guardiola maintains the club will not necessarily stick by that formation when the new season begins.
“You have the quality with Kyle and Danilo, they have that physicality,” he said. “Some days we’ll play thatbut sometimes we’ll play with four.”
Guardiola hailed manner with which his team controlled the match against Spurs and admitted City were not so dominant in his first season at the club.
“We haven’t dominated like today. Last season we were good, but not in 90 minutes like that.
“We cannot forget which team we played. Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Eriksen, one of my favourite players Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Lloris.
“They were the second team last season. Tottenham for the most part of the season played the best football.
“Chelsea deserved by far to win the Premier League, but I enjoy a lot to watch Tottenham play football.
“Okay it’s pre-season, but our performance – we didn’t have a performance like that last season. Especially the quality and intensity.”
“Danilo and Kyle Walker help us a lot to show us our rhythm. When Mendy is fit they know exactly what we want to do.
“It does not matter about individual performance, whether they play good or bad. It is the way, the hunger, the way we played without the ball that I want to see every single game.”Copyright © 2020 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
