Guardiola Issues Gabriel Jesus Apology

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has apologised to Gabriel Jesus for stopping him from taking a penalty on Sunday. The Citizens were handed the chance to take a 1-0 lead with just minutes left to play when they won a penalty against Liverpool at Anfield.

Leroy Sane had been brought down by Virgil van Dijk and Jesus was keen to take the resulting spot-kick, having come off the bench to replace regular penalty-kick taker Sergio Aguero.

However, Guardiola made the call to let summer signing Riyad Mahrez take the penalty and the Algerian subsequently blazed it over the bar.

Indeed, Mahrez has a poor record from 12 yards, missing five of his last eight, and Guardiola has apologised for preventing Jesus from stepping up.

Guardiola said: “During the training sessions every day I see Mahrez taking the penalties and it gave me a lot of confidence. It will be good experience for him, next time it will go in.
“Jesus wanted to (take it). I apologise. It was my decision.”
