Gunners In Pole For Woodman

Arsenal are in pole position to sign Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who admits he’s stuck in a “bad situation” in the reserves. The Gunners, along with Fulham and Celtic have reportedly been scouting the 21-year-old in Newcastle’s Under-23 matches this season.

But Arsenal would appear to have the edge over the others if Newcastle decided to cash in on the England Under-21 international because his father is their Under-23 goalkeeping coach.

Clubs know that Woodman is in contract limbo at St James’ Park after not signing a new deal in the summer and his current deal expires in just over 18 months time.

The Chronicle claim it was then decided that he wouldn’t be allowed to leave on loan for the first half of this campaign, despite enjoying success during his stint at Aberdeen last season.

Speaking earlier this month, Woodman said: “January is around the corner and I have to be prepared for it when it comes.

“I’ve always said I enjoy playing football so whatever level it is, I am going to enjoy it.
“I don’t have to play for the Under-23s – I choose to play.
“I just want to get the best out of a bad situation.”
