Arsenal are tracking 20-year-old CSKA Moscow midfielder Ilzat Ahkmetov, having watched him twice in the past week. The Gunners had a scout present at CSKA’s last two matches – their 2-1 home Champions League defeat to Roma and the 2-0 win over Russian Premier League leaders Zenit St Petersburg at the weekend.
Ahkmetov, a Russia Under-21 international, impressed on both occasions, with the Kyrgyzstan-born attacking midfielder setting up goals in each match.
His recent form earned him a first call up to the Russia senior squad for matches against Germany and Sweden this month, but an injury sustained against Zenit on Sunday meant he had to withdraw.
Arsenal will maintain a watching brief – as they did with ex-CSKA Moscow star Aleksandr Golovin – but must be aware that his two recent Champions League performances against Roma have also drawn the attention of the Serie A club’s sporting director Monchi.
