Simona Halep is the latest top player to confirm her place at the 2019 Sydney International which takes place in early January. The 27-year-old Romanian and current world number one is the eighth star currently in the top 10 WTA players to agree to feature at the warm-up event ahead of the Australian Open later next month.
The French Open winner will also be joined by Naomi Osaka, who shot to fame when defeating Serena Williams in the US Open final in September.
In addition to those two recent confirmations, Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber will bid to retain her title with Sloane Stephens, Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova, Kiki Bertens and Daria Kasatkina also participating in the event between January 6-12.
“I’m delighted that so many of the world’s most talented players have chosen to come to Sydney in January,” said tournament director Lawrence Robertson.
