F1 champion Lewis Hamilton admits he is pleased for Daniel Ricciardo after the Australian agreed to leave Red Bull and join Renault. Despite being on the verge of agreeing a new contract to stay with Red Bull, he had a last-minute change of heart and will drive for Renault next year.
The decision was met with bewilderment around the paddock, as the 29-year-old is leaving a front running team to join Renault who are stuck in the middle of the pack.
However Hamilton, who himself made a then surprise move from McLaren to Mercedes in 2013, says he is pleased that Ricciardo is making a brave decision that could eventually lead to positive things.
“I’m really happy for him,” said Hamilton. “It’s always brave to make a decision that’s out of the norm, knowing that people are going to have opinions about it, and still halfway through a season not knowing how the next year’s going to go.
“It’s an exciting period for him. A lot of people in life are scared of change, of what’s different, and therefore get stuck in a space that’s not their happiest space but they get by.
“It’s cool to see that Daniel, similar to me, is wanting to elevate himself, wanting to try something new, and learn from it – good or bad, and take the risk.”Copyright © 2021 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
