Hamilton Eyes Schumacher’s Records Target

Lewis Hamilton is vowing to do his utmost to get as close as he can to Michael Schumacher’s Formula 1 records before he retires. The 33-year-old Mercedes driver recently secured his fifth world title to move level with Juan Manuel Fangio in second place on the all-time winners’ list.

Only Schumacher is now ahead of him on seven titles, while the German also holds the record for wins and podiums with 91 and 155 respectively.

Hamilton is currently on 71 wins and 132 podiums so still has some way to go to match Schumacher, but that is his ambition between now and his final race in F1.

The British driver, who still has two years left on his current Mercedes’ contract, said: “I’m very, very fortunate to be up here now, obviously with more than most people have, and I don’t take that for granted.

“Whether or not I’m going to have the chance to win more, who knows? I’m going to give it everything to do so. “The 91 wins that he [Schumacher] has, for example, that’s a lot of wins. “There’s still a long way to go but I’m here for a few more years, so I’m hoping that I can at least get close.”
