Hamilton’s Brazil Win Wraps Up Mercedes’ Title

Lewis Hamilton won the Brazilian Grand Prix to seal the fifth successive Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship title for Mercedes. The 33-year-old British driver, who had wrapped up his fifth world title last time out, started Sunday’s race at Interlagos on pole position ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, while his team-mate Valtteri Bottas was third on the grid.

However, it was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who surged from a fifth-placed start to take the lead and seemed on course to claim a second successive race win on the back of his triumph in Mexico a fortnight ago.
But, the Dutchman’s hopes were dashed when Force India’s Esteban Ocon sent him into a spin on lap 44 when he left his car on the inside of the Red Bull at the Senna S and they briefly collided.

That allowed Hamilton to retake the lead and he went on to take the chequered flag for his 10th race win of his successful 2018 F1 campaign.

He said: “These guys have worked so hard over the past six years, it’s been an incredible journey. This is what we’ve worked for every single day. I’ve always said it’s such an honour to drive for them.”

He added: “We were a sitting duck at one stage. We were having problems with the engine. I just want to thank everyone. The team give me the tools and I do the best I can.”

Verstappen did recover to take second place ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, while Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was fourth and Bottas had to settle for fifth spot in his Mercedes.

Vettel faded away to finish sixth with Sauber’s Charles Leclerc, Haas duo Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen and Force India’s Sergio Perez making up the top ten.
