Padraig Harrington says he wants a decision on Europe’s 2020 Ryder Cup captaincy to be made sooner rather than later. Thomas Bjorn successfully led Europe to Ryder Cup glory at Le Golf National last month and the Dane has offered his backing for Harrington to take charge of the reigning champions for the 2020 event at Whistling Straits.

Several players, including Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and Justin Rose, have all thrown their support behind the Irishman, who won the biennial event four times as a player.

Harrington, 47, is the bookies’ favourite to get the job but he wants some clarity about the situation after being asked about the chance of leading Europe on several occasions.

“I keep getting asked and I’m trying to say it hasn’t been decided, but once you start talking about it eventually it starts looking like I think I am,” he was quoted as saying by the Belfast Telegraph. “It puts me in an awkward position so I’d prefer the clarity.

“I understand what Thomas is saying in that it is a distraction, but being the captain in the States is different to being the captain in Europe. In Europe you’re heavily involved in the set-up of the course and different things. It’s 18 months of your life.”
