Hartley And Waller Named Saints Skippers

Northampton Saints prop Alex Waller has been appointed as the team’s co-captain along with hooker Dylan Hartley. England skipper Hartley has held the role solo for a number of years but the club have decided to make the 28-year-old Waller a co-captain to fill the void when their Red Rose stars are away.

Saints director of rugby Chris Boyd believes the pair will work together well through the upcoming season, as Northampton look to improve on their disappointing campaign last term that saw long-time boss Jim Mallinder lose his position at Franklin’s Gardens.

He said: “To keep Dylan in a leadership role was an obvious choice for me.
“We were, however, aware that the club could be without a captain for large chunks of the season while Dylan is away on England duty, so naming Alex as co-captain was the obvious next step.”
Saints will be looking to get their Premiership campaign off to a positive start when they make the trip to Gloucester on September 1.
