While the sanctions taken by the CAF Executive Committee against Morocco on Friday seem very harsh, things could have been worse for them without the intervention of CAF President Issa Hayatou.
Morocco were suspended for the 2017 and 2019 AFCON finals and given an 8-million euros fine.
According to French Daily L’Equipe this Saturday, a first proposal put forward by the African Executive body included a ban from all international club and national teams competitions until 2022 and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
But apparently Hayatou stepped in to stop this.
“If you do that you are going to kill Moroccan Football,” Hayatou told his Executive Committee, l’Equipe could confirm.
