Head Keeping Aussies In First Test

Travis Head’s unbeaten half-century helped Australia end day two of the first Test on 191-7 – still 59 runs short of India’s tally.

The hosts didn’t have to wait long for their first innings on Friday when captain Tim Paine caught Mohammed Shami’s shot from the bowling of Josh Hazelwood as the tourists failed to add any runs to their overnight score of 250 at the Adelaide Oval.

However, Australia were on the ropes when Aaron Finch was removed by Ishant Sharma for a duck with the third ball of the first over before the wickets of Marcus Harris, Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh were taken by spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to leave them on 87-4.

The Baggy Greens edged to 117-4 at tea but Peter Handscomb went for 34 and Paine followed for five early into the evening session.

The first 50-run partnership of their innings came as Head and Pat Cummins settled the ship, only for the second new ball to pay dividends for India when Jasprit Bumrah removed Cummins lbw for 10 runs.

It was left to Head and Mitchell Starc to see out the remaining overs of day two and the hosts now have a tough task to try and get near India’s total on Saturday.

Head, who is 61 not out, said: “We’re hanging in there, India bowled exceptionally well and put us under pressure. It’s nice to do a good job for the team. “Fantastic little fightback at the end there and sets up a really important first hour in the morning. If we can get close, it’s game on.”
