Heroic Etebo Shines, Ezekiel Out As Las Palmas Peg Back Barcelona

Heroic Etebo Shines, Ezekiel Out As Las Palmas Peg Back Barcelona

By James Agberebi: Barcelona missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the Spanish LaLiga table as they were held to a 1-1 away draw by struggling hosts Las Palmas on Thursday night. Super Eagles midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo played for 90 minutes for Las Palmas and gave a very good account of himself, covering every blade of grass in midfield.
Nigerian forward Imoh Ezekiel was not included in the squad for Las Palmas.
Lionel Messi put Barcelona 1-0 up in the 21st minute off a brilliant free-kick.
But in the 48th minute, Las Palmas were back on level terms after Jonathan Calleri scored from the penalty spot.
Etebo, one of Las Palmas heroes from central midfield, received a yellow card in the second half after bringing down Messi who was striding towards goal.
The draw means Barcelona remain top on 66 points, still unbeaten but are now five points above second-placed Atletico Madrid.
Las Palmas are still in the relegation zone as they are 18th on 20 points, one point from safety.

  • He might have been giving this kind of performances in Portugal but because Portuguese league do not have good coverage, it was going below radar. He is getting the rave reviews because of the media. Same goes for Ndidi. When he was in Belgium, his performance rating was under the radar but in EPL, every dick tom and harry has taken notice.etebo, ogu and joel will complete our midfield positions giving us proper competition in that area

etebo is very good and versatile.
onazi should ship in or ship out because players are knocking at his position in the midfield so seriously.
this competition in the midfield is very good for the eagles because it can only make them to perform to their utmost best.

  • Onazi will not in my opinion perform better than Joel Obi, Oghenekero Etebo or John Ogu in that mid-field position no matter the formation the coach chooses to play.

We still need one or two clinical finishers even if they are from the old brigade
    Ike Uche, Obafemi Martin.
Or even Fernando Adi of Portland Timbers, or Henry ONYEKURU or Pual Onuachu.

Etebo is a combative and creative player.with him,Ndidi and Mikel in the midfield super eagles will Excel at the world cup finals.

  • This is
a good development that our lads are doing well in their respective clubs. They should continue with the momentum and the result will translate to a good world cup outings.

kudos to all earlier contributors on the subject under review..
    My take:
When I write on football I put decades of knowledge on the table.
I still hold that Oghenekaro Etebo is the undisputed King of Gra-gra football. Etebo covers every blade on the tuff to stifle opponents from initiating quick attacks, as well as having a keen eye in search of an opening to pull the trigger when within range.
Etebo is an intelligent player & very quick on the ball. He has the highest work-rate in the present SE midfield setup ahead of Ogenyi Onazi, Wilfred Ndidi & John Ogu who are all highly rated.
It is exciting & refreshing to see how competition for a starting shirt has massively increased amongst our energetic midfielders.
My WC midfield would comprise of Joel Obi, Etebo, Wilfred Ndidi playing behind Mikel ‘Diamond’ Obi.
Depending on the opponent, the frontline would be spearheaded by any two (2), from new boy, Noah Sarenren Bazee, Alex Iwobi, Victor Moses to Kelechi Iheanacho assigned to complete the job.
My dream backline would be anchored on Bryan Idowu (LB), Felix Uduakhai (CB), Trust-Ekong (CB), & Ola Aina (RB).
Austin Ejide getting the nod ahead of 6′.5″ Francis Uzohor in between the sticks.
    Formation: 4-3-1-2.
Believe it or not, this is a WC winning team, barring injuries..
    My opinion.

    • Are you realistic on the preferred goalie or is it wishful thinking? Rohr has never mentioned Ejide among the candidates jostling for the gloves. Ejide is good, but I’m afraid he does not have the blessing of the boss.

  • Ejide has always been average. He was there with Vincent Enyema but could not sure the moments when he had the opportunities.
That was how Karl Ikeme came on board.
We can not be on reverse, forward ever backward never.
If we can find 2 young clinical finishers, then there will be no need to consider Obafemi Martin or Ike uche at all.
If Noah Bazee and Farnando Ask are fit and can deliver, even Brown Ideye will be left out.

  • Fernando Adi

  • Huuum. It’s either we take it or leave it, there are glaring problems in goalkeeping department of SE. It could be our Achilles hills in world cup, if drastic measures are not taken as a matter of fact. If Ejide and Enyeama are fit Rohr should invite them to camp so as to compete with Ezenwa, Uzoho and Akpeyi. The exhibition of experience which is the embodiment of good reflexes, communication ability, good composure, clear vision and above all fitness would determine three goalkeepers for world cup without iota of sentiment and favoritism from the handlers, so Nigeria is ready to go.

  • Hmmm…. I wonder y u pple are clamouring for some names here..
Going by the past interviews from rohr, we have Akpeyi, Ezenwa, Alampasu, Uzoho and new Kid Okafor as the goal keepers. He even said ikeme might be fit for England’s friendly. So.
GKs like Ejide and Aiyenugba are not in d picture
..Apart from Trying to convince Udokhai and Akpoguma, No additional player in super eagles’ defence.(Shehu, Aina, Ebuehi, Idowu(Russian interpreter), Echiejile(Experience), Balogun, Ekong, Awaziem, Omeruo(Not sure) and Eze(from the home base team)
…in the attack….from the wings, we have.. Moses, Iwobi, Musa(Russian connection), Simon and Bazee when fit then onyekuru(he doesn’t really believe in him and he is one of d best). Another player is Ademola Lookman(if the talk goes well).
..the point men…Ighalo, iheanacho and ideye. Other players like Adi, Dessers,Onuachu, martins, ik uche( I don’t even know where he plays now) etc might be better than those three but…let’s wait for the friendlies.

@Sean, what made u think these commentaries are only here for fancy purposes?
Whatever u discuss here are read globally by thousands of CSN online readers and followers of Nigerian football. Don’t try to limit the commentaries here to only what u know. Others might know what you don’t know.
Nff, Government officials, Journalists, Coaches of Super Eagles and players read the reactions of fans as feedback sample of the thinking of Nigerians.
So make no mistakes; for example, they are very conversant with the facts that many Nigerians don’t want Akpeyi recalled to the team for the friendlies due to his past failings.
The Coaches are equally disturbed for lack of quality options in goal.
They also know the fitness levels of all our goalkeepers, including Enyeama, Ejide & Ikeme’s health status and all. They can tell u everything.
It will amount to playing the ostrich to think your comments here don’t matter. The reason everyone’s contributions must be clear & factual.
There are several other good football portals dishing out Local & International news on Nigeria players.
The commentary box is also used to gauge the popularity of certain policies & actions of sports administrators.
It is ur right to speak ur mind as u deemed fit without being rude or insensitive to the feelings of the reading public..
    Let’s be guided.
