Hodgson Pleased With Ayew Debut

Crystal Palace manager boss Roy Hodgson felt Jordan Ayew enjoyed a decent debut before tiring against Southampton. Ayew was a deadline-day signing for the Eagles, agreeing a season-long loan move from Swansea, and he played 76 minutes of Palace’s 2-0 defeat to the Saints at Selhurst Park.

Goals from England international Danny Ings and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned the match in the visitors’ favour and means that the south Londoners have now been beaten twice at home already this term.

They have taken three points to sit 15th in the standings but there will be no panic after the way they rallied last season following a dreadful start.

The addition of Ayew to the ranks should be a positive and Hodgson believes he showed promise at the weekend in tough circumstances.

“He did very well because it was his first game and he came to us very late without a particularly strong pre-season, so I thought he worked really hard for his 65 minutes,” he said.

“The main reason for taking him off was because he was tiring which is understandable, and with fresh legs on the bench I thought it was the right moment to introduce players into the game.”
