St Helens coach Justin Holbrook is hoping Adam Swift can hold on until the end of the year before undergoing required shoulder surgery.
The 25-year-old winger suffered the injury during Saints’ surprise 16-12 Super 8s home defeat against Huddersfield on August 10, and Holbrook has revealed the problem “is worse than we thought”.
Speaking in the build-up to Friday night’s eagerly-awaited showdown against derby rivals Wigan Warriors at the Totally Wicked Stadium, he told the St Helens Star: “He has had some extra scans but it does not look good, showing that there are some tears there.
“He will need surgery but we are seeing if we can save him till the end of the year.
“We will have to see if he responds to rehab in the next week, but if he has surgery it will be him done for the year.”
Swift will miss the Wigan game, which Saints need to win to seal their first top-of-the-table Super League finish since 2014, but there is better news regarding centre Ryan Morgan and prop Luke Thompson.
Holbrook added: “Morgan should be fine – he has trained well all week.
