Home Eagles Coach Yusuf: Misfiring Okpotu Will Start Against Equatorial Guinea

By Johnny Edward: Home Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf has stated that Lobi Stars striker Anthony Okpotu will lead the team’s attack when they face Equatorial Guinea in their final group game at the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Tuesday barring injury, Completesportsnigeria.com (CSN) reports.

Okpotu has been unimpressive so far after two games, failing to get off the mark for Nigeria and several calls have been made for the striker to be dropped ahead of the next game for Ibrahim Mustapha who came on for the Lobi Stars striker as a late substitute against Rwanda and Libya.

Salisu remains upbeat that the Nigerian Professional Football League top scorer for last season will end his drought soon.

“We still have four days to the game and Okpotu has more quality than him (Mustapha). Except for injury, Okpotu will start on Tuesday,” Yusuf raid during his post-match conference.

“He (Okpotu) didn’t score against Libya but he did well.

“Okpotu blocked the lines very well and worked very hard defensively but I believe he can score in our final group game.”

  • Did I read that the coach said “Okpotu has more quality than him (Ibrahim)?” Why should a coach say that of his players? Are there not more diplomatic ways to express his mind, like “Okpotu remains the team’s marksman for now, and Ibrahim will continue to play a supporting role, bar injury to Okpotu”? You see, Rohr will not utter such blunder by Yussuf. By the way, the problem is that Okpotu is already feeling like a star and playing lethargic football (does he even have dreadlock before?). He’s not fighting for the ball and just strolls around like Adeniji did in during Oliseh’s time. And where is the Adeniji now? Once these NPFL guys get a few good rating, they start feeling on top of the world. It’s the same lack of humility that’s killing Isaac Success’s career in the EPL. Faleye Sunday is my guy. Always fighting for the ball and always unassuming. I like Mohhamed Nur and Ibrahim too, just as well as Orji, Eze and maybe Ifeanyi.

I don’t even see okpotu as a striker,he is lazy, clumsy and indecisive in critical situation, God helps us in this competition.

My brother @ kel I wonder what kind of manager is this our Yusuf to utter such a word for his players, I have never in heard any manager say that to his players, that one has more quality than the other, there are better ways to say it, we have a long way way to go, the Ibrahim now we start feeling inferior now, well God help us

  • I don’t even know the guys you are talking about. I have watched the 2games Nigeria has played so far but I am still lost as to who is who. Of course except Ezenwa. Meanwhile a coach worth his onions(?) or a wise coach(as opposed to the opposite of wise) shouldn’t rate one player above the other. That coach is setting fire in the camp. Before long there will be division and clicks in the camp. Remember these players come from differnt clubs, tribes and with different educational background. Same club member will start supporting same club members which may even boil over and be carried to the field of play where they may not pass the ball to another club member even when the other player is in a better position to score. This yusuf guy is really packaging fire on his head o. The NFF should orientate him. I learnt he is an assistant coach to Rohr. If true, thats the more reason he should be tactful with his statements.

I did not want to comment on this before but after watching Nigeria/Libya match for the second time I was fully convinced that Okpotu was just in that team as a waste .Though every player has their bad day but for that of Okpotu there was no single time he impressed for the duration of the game . The coach insisted that he is a quality player maybe he (Okpotu) has more quality running around the pich doing nothing impressive .
