Horner backs Vettel To Challenge For F1 Title

Red Bull chief Christian Horner feels history proves that Sebastian Vettel has what it takes to catch Lewis Hamilton in the title race. Hamilton is 40 points clear of the Ferrari driver at the top of the table, with six races still to go, and the Briton is a huge favourite to make it five Formula 1 titles.

However, there are still 150 points to play for until the dust settles on the campaign and, with 25 up for grabs for each race winner, things can turn quickly.

Vettel has already shown his never-say-die attitude when overcoming a 31-point deficit in six races to win his maiden world championship with Red Bull in 2010.

The German flyer then trumped that by bridging a 42-point gap to Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso in five races to claim the 2012 crown, and Horner believes there is still an opportunity for Vettel to claim the spoils in 2018.

“Usually he’s very good under pressure,” Horner said after the Singapore Grand Prix. “He certainly won’t give up – he was 40-odd points down before I think in 2012. But obviously it will be disappointing for him to have lost out to Lewis at this race.

“The Ferrari’s a very quick car. There’s still six races to go, 150 points available. Anything can still happen but Lewis is over a [race win] and a third place ahead.”
