Sebastian Prodl is concerned that his lack of first-team football at Watford this season is hurting his national team prospects.
The centre-back played the first half of Austria’s friendly win over Sweden last week, but knows that being left out of Premier League matches by Javi Gracia are doing his international chances no favours at all.
“I am able to compensate for weeks or even months, but in the long term such a situation is personally unsustainable for the national team,” Prodl told reporters after national team training in Bad Waltersdorf.
The 31-year-old was named on the bench for Watford’s opening three Premier League matches and then watched the win over Tottenham from the stands at Vicarage Road after playing in the EFL Cup win at Reading.
As one of six central defenders in the Hornets squad, Gracia has favoured a partnership of Christian Kabasele and Craig Cathcart this term and Prodl knows competition for places will be fierce this season.
“Everyone has the quality to play,” he said.
“Of course, such a thing can lead to problems in the national team.
“My next big goal is to qualify for the European Championships, I’ll be focused on that and if the situation does not improve I’ll have to think something over.”
However, the ex-Werder Bremen man stressed that he will not be looking for a transfer in January but will wait patiently for his chance.
“There will be injuries and suspensions, and if I’m the one who plays and we have such a run, things can change quickly, but if injuries do happen and I do not play, you have to think something over,” he said.
Prodl, who has 70 caps for Austria, believes he has not had a bad game this year and only lost his place in the side because of food poisoning in May.
He added: “If I had not gotten sick at the time, I might not have been dropped – I cannot remember a bad game of mine in 2018, either in the club or in the national team.”Fastest Paying Betting Site in Nigeria: Grab your 140% First Time Deposit Bonus Now — www.Sportybet.Com Copyright © 2021 Completesports.com All rights reserved.
