Howell III Enjoys Long-Awaited PGA Win

Charles Howell III ended a near 12-year wait for a PGA Tour win when he defeated Patrick Rodgers in a play-off at the RSM Classic. The 39-year-old American, who had not tasted victory since beating Phil Mickelson in a play-off at the February 2007 Nissan Open, took a one shot lead into Sunday’s final round in Sea Island, Georgia.

However, a poor start to his round left Howell playing catch-up to compatriot Rodgers, who held the clubhouse lead on 19-under after an impressive eight-birdie 62.

Howell finished with birdies on three of the last four holes to record a final-round 67 and force the play-off with Rodgers, where he holed a 15-foot putt for birdie on the second extra hole to clinch the title.

Speaking about his frustrating start to the day, Howell said: “I just honestly thought I had shot myself in the foot again. “Sometimes you wonder, well, maybe you just don’t have it in you. Maybe today is just not the day. More than likely I won’t be winning the golf tournament.

“I thought, man, I’ve seen this movie before and I know how it ends. “I thought I had it in me, but I had never seen me do it to prove it to myself. It’s kind of like the guy who thinks he can dunk, bud if you can’t dunk, you just can’t do it. “I thought I had it in me, but it took me a bit to actually do it.”
