Hughes Issues Challenge To Saints Fringe Men

Mark Hughes says places in his Premier League side are up for grabs going into Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie with Everton. The Saints boss is set to ring the changes for the midweek trip to Merseyside, having made 10 alterations to his side for the second-round clash at Brighton.

He will hand the likes of Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens, Jan Bednarek, Matt Targett, Oriol Romeu, James Ward-Prowse and Manolo Gabbiadini an opportunity to impress.

Having failed to win any of their last three Premier League matches, losing to Liverpool and Wolves most recently, Hughes admits he is considering freshening up his team for Saturday’s encounter with Chelsea.

The Welshman has now challenged those players who face Everton in the Carabao Cup to give him food for thought ahead of the visit of the Blues this weekend.

When asked if places in his Premier League team are now up for grabs, he told the Daily Echo: “I think so. Clearly we haven’t won as many games as we wanted to up until this point, I would feel.

“If there is an opportunity and there is a feeling that the team can be improved because somebody has shown good endeavour and desire to get back into the team then I will consider that.”
