Iceland Coach, Hadgrimsson: We Want Victory, But Warm Volgograd Weather Will Favour Nigeria

By Nnamdi Ezekute in Russia:

Iceland coach, Heimler Hadgrimsson, says that the warm weather of Volgograd will favour their opponents, the Super Eagles of Nigeria when they clash in their second Group D match of the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup at the Volgograd Arena on Friday, June 22, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The outside air temperature in Volgograd is expected to rise above 30 degrees celsius on Friday when the Eagles fight for lifeline three points against World Cup newcomers Iceland.

“We expect victory, but the heat in Volgorad is for Nigeria to enjoy. Of course, it’s easier for them in such conditions than us. However, we’re taking the weather into cognisance as we make a plan for the game,” Hadgrimsson told journalists at their team base camp in Russia.

“The pitch of Volgograd is very good. It’s absolutely dry for obvious reasons, because it’s hot. As soon as it is rains, it will feel better. In general, the conditions are excellent for the game.

“The strength of Nigeria is the players’ good physicality. They are good athletes, and run very well. They also have good counter-attacks. If you look at their matches, you can see how they grew tactically. It’s a team learning fast and improving from training. Their players are playing at the highest level, and of great individual talents.”

Going into Friday’s game, Iceland are third in the Group D table with a point from their draw with Argentina. Nigeria bring up the rear in the group after losing 2-1 to Croatia in their first match in Kaliningrad. Croatian top the group with three points while Argentina, in second position, have one point too as Iceland.

Argentina is in crises, according to this article from Mail Online:

Argentina players want Jorge Sampaoli kicked out before Argentina’s last game against Nigeria, with Sergio Aguero hitting out at his manager after the crushing defeat by Croatia.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero was in no mood whatsoever to hang around after the match as he stormed out of his very brief and heated interview, where he appeared to hit out at Sampaoli.

Argentina were defeated 3-0 on Thursday, leaving them on the brink of World Cup elimination and after the final whistle, Sampaoli admitted that his ‘project has failed’ and that he struggled to find a system to get the best out of Lionel Messi and Co.
And when Sampaoli’s strong words were put to Aguero – substituted after the first goal went in – the striker ominously replied: ‘Let him say what he wants’, before quickly walking away.

The Argentina Football Association is hoping tempers cool before the final match against Nigeria but Jorge Burruchaga has already been consulted to take over.

Summing up the chaos that currently engulfs Argentinian football, Sampaoli, despite having an indifferent track record, has a five year contract that would cost £17.5m to get rid of him.

The likelihood is that he stays but with players already harbouring grave doubts before the Croatia debacle, he will need to repair relationships quickly before the final game.

Meanwhile, Croatia qualified from their group with a match to spare thanks to goals from Ante Rebic, Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic.

Croatia take on Iceland in their final group game, while Argentina face Nigeria needing something special.
