Ighalo Can’t Break 9-Game Drought As Watford Hold Everton

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo went nine games without scoring as he fired blanks yet again on Saturday in Watford’s 1-1 draw against Everton.

James Mccarthy scored the opening goal for Everton but Jose Holebas equalised for Watford.

Playing upfront alongside strike partner Troy Deeney, Ighalo who has not scored a Premier League for the Hornets since January 23 in a 2-1 home win against Newcastle United came close on a number of occasions to score his 15th Premier League goal.

Watford made their intentions known early in the game with an attacking move but Etienne Capoue was flagged offside just in the 2nd minute.

Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu connected with a pass around the edge of the box in the 19th minute, aimed and struck. His attempt went in the direction of the right-hand post, but Heurelho Gomes was alert and didn’t let the score change.

Ighalo’s best chance in the first half to break his goal duck arrived with seven minutes left on the clock when he almost latched on to a defence splitting pass into the box but Everton keeper Joel Robles was quick enough and comes off his line to thwart the pass.

And in the 42nd minute Ighalo climbed high to meet a cross on the edge of the box and hit the ball with a poor header. His attempt went wide of the left post.

The Super Eagles star almost scored in the 45th minute when he collected a rebound and shot. The Everton keeper saved the effort before they eventually went ahead through McCarthy who rolled the ball into the back of the net from close range after poor Watford defending.

Left-back Hollebas however equalised for Watford as he out-jumped the defence and glanced a header into the back of the net in the third minute of added time to make it 1-1.

Ighalo was apparently frustrated as he went close to scoring in the 81st minute but his shot was blocked.
