Ighalo: Super Eagles Didn’t Create Enough Chances Vs Great Croatia; We’ll Improve

By Nnamdi Ezekute in Kaliningrad:

Changchun Yatai striker Odion Ighalo is hopeful the Super Eagles will correct their mistakes and bounce back from their 2-0 opening day defeat to Croatia at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The Super Eagles suffered an opening day loss at the World Cup for a third time courtesy of an own goal from Oghenekaro Etebo and a penalty from Luka Modric.
“We did not create enough chances going forward and to score,” he told reporters after the game in Kaliningrad.
“We don’t have to blame the referee. Croatia are a great team and they did well.
“You see that the first was an own goal and the second a penalty.
“We did our best in that game but we must correct the mistakes from the last game.”
Ighalo, who extended his goal drought to seven games, also claimed it is difficult playing as a lone striker.
He added: “It’s difficult sometimes playing alone upfront against four or five defenders, but the coach has the final say, not me.”

    I feel pity for my friend Odion Ighalo. .
    WC is not Chinese Super League football where you wake up and score four (4).
    In as much as I wouldn’t want to dampen the spirit of Ighalo, I would be wrong to blame him for his poor outing.
    Gernot Rohr is responsible for fielding a man who doesn’t score, even in friendlies, but now expects a miracle from him at the world cup.
    You can’t be doing same things repeatedly and expect a different result.
    Rohr seemed confused already.
    If he is reading this piece, this is my simple advice to him.
    – Don’t play Ighalo next match against Iceland
    – Use two offensive players in Iwobi & Iheanacho
    – Ring your midfield around Etebo, Ndidi, Mikel
    – Ogu, Balogun, Troost should play as central defensive trio
    – Idowu & Ubuehi as wingbacks
    * Moses
    * Simy
    * Musa.
    You can get 3-5 goals from this selection.
    Good luck!

    • Moses should not start on the bench. He is one of our most offensive players. We need players who can drive the ball forward and take the game to our opponents. Moses did that yesterday.
      Your wing back suggestion of Tyronne is in line.
      We need urgency in our attacks by players moving forward not needless back passes.

      • He is an offensive player who kills team play. Moses plays for himself, not the team. At this stage that’s not going to work. If Moses does not change his approach he will land Eagles in hot water with his diving.

    No excuses from you coach Rohr, you failed. Here is what ZOLA said about you. Nigerians said the same thing too. Croatia were not better than us but your stubborn attitude and wrong
    Tactics and sub lets the team down.

    Chelsea hero Gianfranco Zola has accused Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr of being tactically naive in the wake of the national team’s 2-0 loss to Croatia in their World Cup opener on Saturday night.

    The USA 1994 World Cup star reckons that Rohr would have made tactical and formation changes in the second half but the German failed to do so.

    Speaking as an analyst on SuperSport, Zola said : ”I believe that Croatia hasn’t played a fantastic game, I think they won the game mainly because of the mistakes Nigeria made

    ”Also because Nigeria wasn’t unable to change the original plan, because when they went 1-0 down they could have done something more to change the dynamics of the team, and something they didn’t do well, that’s why the lost the game.”

    Oghenekaro Etebo sent the ball into his own net in the 32nd minute to give Croatia the lead, and the Europeans doubled their advantage with nineteen minutes remaining after a defensive blunder by the inexperienced William Troost-Ekong.

    God bless Nigeria!!!

    I saw a picture of three hefty men with some sizable rocks in their hands lurking at a junction waiting for something or somebody. Someone passing by was curious and decided to ask who they were waiting for with all of them handling rocks. Their answer was so hilarious you just have to laff. Their answer to the curious man was that ” we are waiting for that stupid pig who said Nigeria will reach semi finals in the world Cup!!!!” You can see now that it is just guesswork in these predictions.

  • I new Ighalo will not score goals and i have always said it to my friends. Ebuehi is a better and offensive player that can change defense to attack but i wonder why he is always on the bench. Rorh lost the game for us bcos he played our stars off thier favorite positions. I prefer ihaeanacho who can make runs and a better box in box out player to a rugby and figid ighalo who only hit the cross bar in seven matches

  • If I wer igallo I will ask d coach to left me wait til second  half be4 entering to play against iceland. On friday.

    Odion Ighalo said it all. Our attack is blunt as a result of only him playing the striker role in the front. The truth is football is all about taking risk. No matter how careful a coach is trying to play with more defenders and midfielders, his sides will always concedes goal when they meet a better side.
    My advice for the coach is to play with at least two strikers that can also fall back to the midfield if there is pressure. Our attack sincerely speaking lack bites. We need another striker to be supporting Ighalo upfront.
