Iheanacho Benched As Manchester City Overcome Southampton

Manchester City kept up the pressure on their title rivals at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday when they defeated Southampton 3-1 to temporarily climb to the top of the table with 29 points.

Goals by Kevin De Bruyne, Fabian Delph and Aleksandr Kolarov ensured victory for Manuel Pellegrini’s team who lost to Juventus in the Champions League midweek.

The first half ended 2-0 in favour of the Citizens but Shane Long soon made it 2-1 for The Saints four minutes into the second half when he was at the end of a cross by the impressive Sadio Mane.

But Kolarov made it 3-1 in the 68th minute finishing off an attacking move that the guests would have nipped in the bud but for their sloppy defending particularly Virgil Van Dijk who failed to close down on assist-maker, De Bruyne.

Bruyne scored the first goal as he was in the right position in the ninth minute to bundle home a cross from Raheem Sterling who dispossessed Japanese defender Maya Yoshida of the ball.

Fabian Delph made it two for Manuel Pellegrini’s team when his shot at the edge of the ball in the 20th minute was deflected into the net by Virgil van Dijk.

City were the first to threaten as early as the first minute of the game when Raheem Sterling’s low shot from a Yaya Toure flick was saved by Maarten Stekenlenburg.

Van Dijk sought to make amends for his part in City’s second goal, when he rifled a shot that hit the post in the 22nd minute.

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho warmed up on the sidelines alongside returning David Silva but it was the Spaniard that was brought on in the second half as the Nigerian was eventually not played by Manuel Pellegrini.
