Ikpe Ekong: Drop Mikel From Eagles If…

As criticism continues to pour in following Nigeria’s recent dip in form, ex-Super Eagles midfielder Prince Ikpe Ekong has joined in by questioning the quality of players being invited to the team.

Ekong describes some of the Super Eagles invitees as ‘amateurs’, and says the selection process now seems more like a “tomato market”.

“Many guys these days you hear being invited to the national team camp are just amateur players,” he told sl10.ng.

“Almost all Nigerian players’ CV reads that they are once invited to the national team. But the national team should be a place for competitive players,” he added.

The 36-year old believes only the best and most active players, irrespective of where they play should be invited to the Super Eagles, but says the whole process now seems more like a family and friends affair and says it is destroying Nigerian football.

“Why don’t they invite players who play regularly abroad and at home? Is it now a family and friends affair? It is destroying our football can’t people see? All we have to do is see who is doing well irrespective of where they are coming from.”

Speaking further, the for AC Reggiana of Italy midfielder also goes for Chelsea midfielder, John Obi Mikel and says the 27-year old should be replaced in the Super Eagles if he cannot play regularly for his club.

“If Mikel is not playing regularly then get somebody else who plays regularly,” he demanded.
