Ikpeba Sets Quarter-Final World Cup Target For Super Eagles

By Kayode Ogundare:

As the countdown to the 2018 FIFA World Cup draws near, former Super Eagles forward Victor Ikpeba has insisted that the national team should be able to reach the quarter-finals next year in Russia.

Speaking in an interview with Lagos-based ChannelsTv, the 1997 African Footballer of the Year reckons that the gap between the big teams and the smaller ones has diminished considerably and this gives Nigeria the chance to surpass its previous Round of 16 achievement.

“I think a reasonable target will be a quarter-final spot becuase we have the players to do it. Three times now we have gotten to the second round and I think we have the best chance to move further than that with this current side,” he began.

Ikpeba reckoned that the class of 1994 could have gone all the way but for naivety and insists the current side is best-placed to break the second round barrier.

He said: “Given the quality of talent we had in 1994 and maybe 1998 too, we should have achieved more than we did but we now have the chance to set that right and I believe it is not an impossible task for the Super Eagles to achieve in Russia.”

Ikpeba, a member of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold-winning U-23 team, also played at two AFCONs winning a bronze and gold as well as two World Cup appearances. He had 19 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring five goals.

  • All the countries are going to Russia with the mind set of winning the world cup then, ours is going with the mind set of reaching the quarter finals. What a poor mentality. If you ask Iceland, Switzerland, Morocco, Senegal even Peru, they will tell you their going to win the world cup. Why are our football administrators shallow in their thinking.

  • @Adache Peter. So in your mind you can outplay Brazil, Germany, and win the World Cup? Have you sat down one day and ask yourself and browse the answer to this question of how many countries make up FIFA and how many countries have won the WC? Has African or Asian countries taken it? Africa has 54 countries in FIFA. Asia has 36 countries. North America had about 10 countries or so. Oceania has about 10 or thereabout countries too. The Russian block has about 20 countries or so. That remains only Western Europe and South America. These are the only regions that have picked up the WC trophy. Uruguay, Brazil, Germany, France, Argentina, England, Spain, Italy. Just 8 countries!!!!!!! 8 countries out 208 FIFA affiliated countries. So Adache, Victor Ikpeba is only realistic like the other 200 countries that know that although they will not carry the WC but we will all go anyway. Nigeria will not carry the WC but we can reach quarter finals or even semi final if we avoid Brazil and Germany.

  • I wonder why Nigerian no they think positive no one as ever think of Nigeria will win world cup, all there target is quoter final not even final, mind u Greece won Europe in 2004 without a single world class player in d team, but with there positive talk they achieved it, Abeg Nigeria will win next year world cup like it or leave it God bless Nigeria

I strongly believe that Nigeria can beat Germany and brazil. No one knew that Nigeria would beat brazil and Argentina in Atlanta 96 and won the cup. Ghana played with Germany in Brazil 2014 and ended 2-2. If Nigeria or any other Africa countries meet Germany, brazil or any other big country in football pressure would be on them because it is big history if they loose. For me I believe that any country can shock the world.

  • Well winning the world cup is a big dream. But it doesn’t happen that way.You need to be grouped in a favourable group, then qualify from the group, then beat opponent during second round, then beat a team during quarter, semi and final before you can think of winning the world cup.It is very very difficult but easy to say.But I want Nigeria to break the jinx of second round and proceed to semi final.Ghana nearly did it during 2010 world cup in South Africa. If not for that penalty missed by Asamoah Gyang
