Injured Moses Simon Ruled Out Of World Cup

By Nurudeen Obalola:
Gent forward Moses Simon will not be a part of the Super Eagles squad to the Russia 2018 World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

The winger, who played a key role in Nigeria’s qualification for the tournament, has been struggling with an injury and sat out the team’s training in Port Harcourt on Sunday as they prepared for Monday’s pre-World Cup friendly against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

CSN had reported two days ago that Simon would miss the Congo friendly with a thigh injury, and it appears he will not be able to shake it off before the World Cup, which starts on 14 June. Nigeria’s first match in Russia is against Croatia on 16 June.

“Moses Simon will not be travelling with the team on Tuesday because he’s injured,” Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr told reporters in Port Harcourt after the team’s training session.

Zenith Ziva

“The nature of his injury is such that he won’t be recovering quickly enough to make the World Cup.

“It’s really unfortunate but he remains in my future plans.”

Camp sources also confirmed to CSN that Simon is not going to be fit in time to make the World Cup squad.

The Super Eagles will jet out to London on Tuesday where they will face England on 2 June in another warm-up match.
The team will then head off to Austria where they have a training camp and play a friendly with Czech Republic, before going to Russia for the World Cup.

The Super Eagles are in Group D at the World Cup with Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

OMG!! Great Loss. We will miss your pace, dribbles amd team spirit. Big chance for Iwobi and Musa. Buh i will never consider Iwobi nor Musa ahead of Moses simon even Our Proud Superstar Victor Moses will surely miss him(Simon) cuz they’ve both grown to understanding eachother e.g Nigeria vs Cameroon–Victor Moses goal. All the best.#SoarSuperEagles

  • This is extremely sad. He was one of the sure bets. It is very likely that Simi will be on his way to Russia with this development.

Really sad, our best dribbler, that easily removed defenders from his way, and partners with the team to torment any opposition. Nigerians will greatly miss you. He is always a delight to watch. Then Simmy, now has a very strong chance to make the final list.

Something tells me he can still make it! Don’t you believe? With God all things are possible to them that believes.

  • Though the coach is out to the prune the number of players down to 24, I would have suggested for inclusion of kelechi Nwakali for close assessment in the friendly matches lined before the world cup and final list just to see how he’ll measure up against the players invited. I’ll take both of the Nwakali brothers any day over Agu or Musa esp now that some of our key midfielders are racing against time to be fit before the kickoff.

I really feel Moses Simon. But he’s still a very young lad. I’ve been sensing this since they reported he’s struggling with a thigh injury. Now I don’t see nothing stopping Simi Nwankwo from strolling to Russia. I just want to see him play tomorrow to access is qualities. Musa too will have a chance to claim a starting spot at the WorldCup. We have a phletora of talents in the attacking positions.

    Still can’t believe it !!
Got a call from my cousin early today and he told me…check up with Colin Udoh live coverage on FB and also Heard it….and I had no choice but to accept it.

M Simon is not the superstar type of player but the super eagles and any SE positive soccer fan will miss him….HE IS A TEAM PLAYER !!
And that’s what the SE team need going to the World Cup…TEAM-Playing players!!!
Our individual players are not yet in the super-top-class category yet where Individual brilliance give results in matches but what we lack there, we sure made up in solid and cohenisive team-players…..and Moses Simon is one of such positive impact team-player we will miss!!

@Moses Simon….. Guy, it is not the end of the world ok
    God knows better…!!
Your time will come again….you are still a young man and the future is BRIGHT !!!
Just pick yourself up and get that treatment, get back to full fitness and COME BACK STRONGER !!!

You will be in my prayers ok
Use Obi Mikel as an example….he missed the 2010 edition due to injury but today, he captains a great side to yet another mundial….
So M. Simon….more glorious days ahead, ok
    BE STRONG!!!

It’s an unfortunate case for the lad. I wish him speedy recovery to bounce back and better like never before.

  • Dis shud ve been detected be4 now. Some other  guys are still der with injury expecially  d back line.I m sure der injury wil get aggravate after one or two games. Dis now bring to questioning y y y d list was reduced to 30 inntead of d 35 previously announced. By d time eagles get to Russia  I won’t  be surprised to see igallo in noba 5 jersey.

  • This is really sad! Moses Simon is one of the unsung heroes of our World Cup qualifying rounds – especially in that two legged encounter against Cameroon. In terms of contribution to the overall performance of the team, he is not too far behind the other Moses. I wish him the best and with age still on his side, I believe there are more chances for him in future.
Simy Nwankwo will be the direct beneficiary of this situation, unless he throws away the chance with a very poor performance against Congo DR

  • Oh dear! This is really sad news that I am waking up to this morning.

For all his hard work in qualification
particularly in matches against Cameroon and Zambia.

This guy’s close-control dribbles, pace, acceleration and goal scoring killer instincts will be sorely missed in Russia.

This reminds me of when Ikechukwu Uche missed South Africa 2010 also due to injury.

I wish Moses Simon and wonderful and injury-free outings next season for club and country.

I am really sad to read this, have seen it in other sports websites but was waiting to confirm it here on CSN. The lad still has age on his side and will definitely go for another world cup.
His injury brings to the fore, the questions that some of us needs answers to..are we going to the world cup with injured players?
The Medical team should do all they can to make sure we are going to the mundial with fully fit players. It is sad that these injury news are always linked to our very important players..
May God keep the team from injuries, give them the heart to know that they represent 180million hearts who have not had the best of governance and relieson football once again to cheer.

A gifted and committed team player. Gives his best for the team ALWAYS.

  • Wow! I really wish Rohr will come out tomorrow and deny this report and say he was quoted out of context. Why can’t he be taken to the World Cup like that? He can get healed before the second match nah?

  • Balorx 3 years ago

@kel what u are requesting for is not possible for him to recover is at least 3 weeks and to gain full fitness is about five weeks. he should kindly stay at hone and wait for next world cup am sure nff would have thought about this……we are to go to the worjd with the best legs and not half fit players.

  • NWAKALI KELECHI should be invited now. They should call him to replace this PRECIOUS lost. If Nigeria use the best players at their disposal, with average commitment, they will spring surprises. I love Nigeria. God bless Nigeria. West Africa stand behind you. Make us proud.

is a pity tinz ar turning up ds way, now i gernot rohr mearnt b tinkin of sndin a 35 man list dan 30. cos nw d list is jst mar wt injuries. bt wt d current fate of moses simon and den awaziem, i tink lokosa and eze can step in. My initial 23 world cup list @ds mundial would hv been: goalies; Uzoho, Ezenwa & Akpeyi; defence; Shehu, Echiejile, Omeruo, Ekong, Balogun, Aina, Idowu, Awaziem & Ebuehi; midfield; Obi mikel, Etebo, Onazi, Ogu & Ndidi: forward; Ighalo, Moses, Musa, Iwobi, Iheanacho & Simon. bt wt injuries hanging on few (awaziem, simon, ndidi & ebuehi). i see ndidi mkin d slot, as 4 ebuehi d rohr has to decide b/w him and joel obi yes both of dem bt i wont b shock if joel obi dnt mk d slot. For simon am sure his spot wil b taken by a shocker player (Lokosa) while awaziem & eze wil slot it out for d final slot.

  • We need addition to the list of invited players as injuries becomes unavoidable in every team. please ROHR invite Nwakali kelechi now to replce Simom. thank you,
