Alderweireld Happy To Be Away From Spurs

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld says it is a “nice change of scenery” to be away from the club during the international break. It has been a difficult start to the season for Tottenham, who already sit 13 points behind leaders Liverpool in the Premier League and have failed to win any of their opening two matches in the Champions League.

The north Londoners were also dumped out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Colchester and things came to a head last week, as they were thrashed 7-2 at home by Bayern Munich in Europe before losing 3-0 at Brighton in the league.

Mauricio Pochettino has work to do to turn Spurs’ fortunes around although his cause has not been helped by the continued speculation linking the likes of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Alderweireld with moves away from the club.

All three players are out of contract at the end of the season and so are free to negotiate moves to European clubs in the new year.

Alderweireld’s latest comments will have Spurs supporters worried after he indicated he is happy to be away with Belgium at the moment. “All we need to do is win a few games to get back on track, but I’m not hiding that being with the national team is a nice change of scenery,” the centre-back was quoted as saying by Belgian publication DH.

The 30-year-old is keen to turn things around with Spurs and feels there is no need to panic – even though they sit considerably closer to the bottom of the table than they do to the top. “A career is made of ups and downs. A few months ago we were playing in the Champions League final. It’s proof that everything can change very quickly, whether it’s good or bad,” the former Atletico Madrid star added. “You have to accept the current situation and not panic.”

Spurs face back-to-back home games after the international break. They will play host to struggling Watford in the Premier League on September 19 before they welcome Red Star Belgrade to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Champions League three days later.
