Russell Domingo has signed a two-year contract to become the new head coach of Bangladesh. The South African takes over from Steve Rhodes, who vacated the role after leading the Tigers to an eighth-place finish at this year’s World Cup in England.

Domingo will bring with him plenty of coaching experience, as he led South Africa to the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup in 2014 before guiding the Proteas to the same stage of the one-day tournament the following year. The 44-year-old is looking forward to taking on his new role, which will begin with a one-off Test against Afghanistan in Chittagong next month.

“It is a massive honour,” Domingo said. “I have followed Bangladesh’s progress with keen interest and I am extremely excited to assist the team in reaching the goals that they are capable of.” Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan is also delighted to have been able to appoint a coach of Domingo’s experience to the role. “He has a wealth of experience and we have been very impressed with his passion and coaching philosophy,” Hassan added.
