Barca Not The Best, Says De Jong

Frenkie De Jong admits Barcelona were far from their best despite wrapping up a 2-1 win over Arsenal at Camp Nou on Sunday.

The English Premier League side were leading at half-time thanks to a goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Barca dominated after the break and were back on level terms when Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a calamitous own goal.

Luis Suarez grabbed a late winner, but De Jong, who has just signed from Ajax and was making his Camp Nou debut, said the performance was not the best. The midfielder was also awarded most valuable player, but again felt he did not deserve it.

“The presentation of the squad and the support from the fans in my debut at Camp Nou was very impressive,” he told reporters. “We did not play a good match. I believe we must have a better rhythm when circulating the ball and do a better job pressing after losing it.

“There are differences [between Barça and Ajax]. In both clubs we take care of the ball but the rest is very different. “I did not deserve [the Gamper MVP award].”
