Barty Stunned By Riske At Wimbledon

World number one Ashleigh Barty has been knocked out of Wimbledon after losing to unseeded American Alison Riske in the fourth round. The Australian, who was still riding a crest of a wave following her first Grand Slam success at the French Open last month, had been the heavy favourite to make it through to the quarter-finals and looked on course after she comfortably won the first set.

However, world number 55 Riske had been taken the distance in her three previous matches at this year’s tournament and she once again showcased her battling spirit as she eventually prevailed 3-6 6-2 6-3 after one hour and 36 minutes on Court Two.

The 29-year-old is now entering unchartered territory as it is the first time she has made it through to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. Her reward for beating Barty is a clash with seven-time winner Serena Williams, who comfortably saw off Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 6-2 in her fourth-round match.

Barty, who herself has never made it beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon, will now be looking to move on quickly although she was magnanimous in defeat. “Overall I didn’t play a poor match,” Barty said. “When I needed to, when the big moments were there, Alison played better today. It’s a tough one to swallow but I lost to a better player.”
