Bayern Hit Out At French Over Defender Injury

Bayern Munich have hit out at the French football federation for demanding injured defender Lucas Hernandez link up with the rest of their squad. Hernandez is struggling with a knee injury that he picked up against Paderborn and has been forced to miss the last two games against Tottenham and Hoffenheim.

The club-record signing from Atletico Madrid clearly has a problem, and in an attempt to get the player back fit as soon as possible, Bayern informed the French that Hernandez would not be joining them.

However, the French federation replied saying they expected the player to return to France nonetheless, and it has not gone down well with Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

“Of the four French players demanded, of course we’re making three healthy professionals in Kingsley Coman, Corentin Tolisso and Benjamin Pavard available as per FIFA statutes, but we expected more understanding over Lucas Hernandez due to the risk involved – like the German soccer federation is showing with the injury-induced dropouts of Toni Kroos, Jonas Hector and others,” Rummenigge said.

Hernandez had an operation on the same knee back in March when he was still with Atletico and Bayern are keen to ensure he make a full recovery.

France are due to face Iceland and Turkey in Euro 2020 qualifiers, and although Hernandez is unlikely to play, the fact he is being made to travel, has not gone down well with Bayern. Bayern are also at odds with the German national side over the possibility of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer losing his place as their number one.
