Bertrand Chat Eased Targett’s Villa Move

Defender Matt Targett has revealed a chat with Ryan Bertrand persuaded him to move to Aston Villa. Targett has made the switch to Villa Park after six years with Southampton having come up through Saints academy from the age of eight.

He had spent his entire career at St Mary’s, save for a loan spell with Fulham in the second half of the 2017-18 season, making 63 appearances in all competitions. It seemed likely that the 23-year-old was going to move to the West Midlands this summer and a conversation with Bertrand, who played 16 times for the Villans on loan during the 2013-14 campaign, convinced him he was making the correct decision.

“I had a chat with Ryan and he was massively positive about Aston Villa,” he told the club’s official website. “He said it was a massive football club, with a great stadium, great facilities and great fans. “I know he wasn’t here that long but he made a point of telling me how much he enjoyed playing here. He couldn’t have spoken anymore highly of this place when he chatted to me. “It is a fantastic club and I can’t wait to start this new journey here.”
