Tabuena -Birdie Blitz Affected Me

Tabuena -Birdie Blitz Affected Me

Miguel Tabuena says the thought of making history cost him the outright lead at the ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth on day one.

Philippines star Tabuena, who started his opening round at Lake Karrinyup Country Club on the 10th, birdied his first seven holes and was on course to match the world record of nine birdies in a row.

However, a par at the 17th ended the 24-year-old’s hopes although a birdie at the 18th equalled the record for most birdies on a first nine on the European Tour, matching Marten Olander in the opening round of the 2002 Novotel Perrier Open de France and Craig Lee in round three at the 2013 Omega European Masters.

Tabuena ended up signing for a seven-under-par 65, having made two bogeys and just one gain on the remaining nine holes, and he admits the pressure of making history did get in his head.

“I tried to keep it in the back of my head but it caught up to me on the third and fourth hole,” he told the European Tour website. “That was like I started to force some stuff, which I shouldn’t have, and it cost me.

“I started to force shots that I wasn’t comfy with. I started to go at pins when I shouldn’t have and the bogey on the par three (fifth) cost me.”

Tabuena is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Norwegian Kristoffer Reitan and the duo are two strokes clear of Englishman Richard McEvoy and New Zealand’s Benjamin Campbell.

Ryan Fox then heads a group of six players a further stroke back on -4, three shots off the pace.
