Blow For Young Liverpool Striker

Liverpool have confirmed that young FA Youth Cup-winning striker Paul Glatzel has undergone an operation on a knee injury. The 18-year-old forward suffered the suspected anterior cruciate ligament injury during the Reds’ pre-season friendly against Tranmere Rovers on July 11.

Glatzel captained Liverpool to their Youth Cup victory over Manchester City last season, scoring the decisive penalty in the shootout that decided the final. The dual international, who has represented Germany at U15 and U16 level, also broke into the Liverpool Under-23 squad by the end of the campaign.

Neil Critchley, manager of Liverpool U23s, said: “Paul will receive all the support he needs from ourselves as an Academy and from the medical staff at Melwood during what will be a tough period of rehab.

“Luckily, we know Paul has the strength of character to overcome this setback and we look forward to seeing his talents back out on the pitch.” Glatzel is the second Liverpool player to suffer an ACL injury in pre-season, with Nathaniel Clyne also out. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has said Glatzel will be able to undergo his rehabilitation with the first team at Melwood.
