Brighton’s Webster Ready For The International Stage

Brighton defender Adam Webster admits he has his eyes on an England cap as long as he can maintain his current form. The centre-back was forced to bide his time at the start of the season as coach Graham Potter decided to use Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Dan Burn as his back three.

A change in the system now means that Webster has featured in five Premier League games, including last weekend’s 3-0 success over Tottenham. Webster has made the step up to the Premier League from the Championship look easy since he joined the Seagulls in August from Bristol City.

After signing a four-year deal, Webster had been hoping to move straight into the first team after Brighton paid £20million for his services. He has now managed to dislodge Republic of Ireland international Duffy after a recent injury, and he has revealed an England call up is on his agenda.

The Chichester-born stopper told The Argus: “One day I would love to play for England. “For me right now, I am just focusing on Albion and taking each game as it comes. We have got some tough games coming up, and I am just fully focused on that right now.”

Webster has represented England at Under-18 and under-19 level, but his last appearance for his country came in 2013. Spells at Aldershot Town, Ipswich Town and the Robins have given him a good grounding and he will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Dunk who has recently been capped by the Three Lions.

The likes of Harry Maguire, John Stones, Michael Keane, Joe Gomez, Tyrone Mings and Fikayo Tomori are all currently ahead of him in the pecking order. Webster will be out to impress Gareth Southgate when the domestic campaign resumes on October 19. Potter’s side will travel to fellow strugglers Aston Villa before they then take on Norwich City, Manchester United and Leicester City.
