Burnley Ace Gudmundsson Hit By Fresh Injury Blow

Burnley midfielder Johann Berg Gudmundsson has suffered a fresh injury blow while on international duty with Iceland. Burnley could be without the wide player for a number of weeks after Gudmundsson sustained an injury to his left leg in the early stages of Iceland’s Euro 2020 qualifier against France in Reykjavic.

The 28-year-old had only just returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a calf injury and Clarets boss Sean Dyche will be hoping his player has not suffered a recurrence.

Gudmundsson fell to the ground in the 13th minute and was replaced by former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson. Iceland went on to lose 1-0 after Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud scored the only goal of the game to claim all three points for the French.

After the match, head coach Erik Hamren was asked for an update on the status of the Burnley star ahead of Iceland’s next qualifier against Andorra on Monday. “I can’t say how bad the injury is, but he won’t be ready on Monday,” replied the ex-Sweden coach, who succeeded former dentist Heimir Hallgrimsson in 2018.

Gudmundsson was not the only injury victim on Friday night with central midfielder Runar Mar Sigurjonsson also picking up a hamstring problem during the course of the match.

Burnley will be anxious to get the ex-Charlton Athletic man back at Gawthorpe for an assessment, but it looks unlikely that he will be available for the next fixture away at Leicester City on the resumption of Premier League action.

Gudmundsson came off the Molineux pitch with a calf problem in the 1-1 draw at Wolves at the end of August.
He then nearly returned to action when Norwich City visited Turf Moor, but did eventually make his comeback to the match-day squad for the 2-2 draw at Villa Park on September 28.

He was unavailable for selection for most of September because of the calf problem and did not report for international duty that month, missing Iceland’s double header against Moldova and Albania.
