The 35-year-old, who was part of Europe’s losing Ryder Cup team in 2016, is yet to make a single bogey over his opening 36 holes and he is right in contention to land his fourth European Tour title. World number 1413 Samuel Del Val also signed for a brilliant 65 on Friday and he has sole possession of third on -10, one stroke off the pace, while fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm is just a stroke behind on -9.

South African Zander Lombard carded a second straight round of 67 to move into fifth place on -8, while Germany’s Marcel Siem, Finland’s Mikko Korhonen and Australian Jason Scrivener are in a share of sixth on -7. First-round leader Kristian Krogh Johannessen found life tougher on day two and he could only manage a two-over-par 73, dropping him down into a five-way tie for ninth on -6.
