Chairman Issues Kovac Backing

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has backed manager Niko Kovac over his decision to play Philippe Coutinho over Thomas Muller this season. There has been plenty of speculation regarding Muller’s future at Allianz-Arena after finding himself down the pecking order with the Bavarian giants this season.

Manchester United have been previously linked with a move for the experienced forward and could come in for an offer in the January transfer window.

Rummenigge has offered support to his manager Kovac as he feels the boss can only select 11 players and, having strengthened with the signing of Coutinho from Barcelona over the summer, of course some stars are going to miss out on the starting line-up.

He told Die Welt: “What I think is somewhat absurd: in the summer, we were criticized at times for transfers that had thus far failed to materialize. “Now we have a fantastic squad, and our coach is criticized because inevitably this or that prominent player doesn’t play from the start.”

Bayern, who currently sit in their familiar place at the top of the Bundesliga table, are next in action on Saturday when they make the trip to Augsburg.
