Champions League Matchday Two Winners And Losers

Matchday Two of the Champions League is over and it was a week to forget for some, while others put down a marker to go far in Europe’s elite competition. Few would argue that Tottenham had an absolute nightmare when losing 7-2 at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.

There has been talk that all is not well at the club this season and the alarm bells are well and truly ringing for last season’s runners-up after this defeat.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men started slowly last year before scraping through the group and going all the way to the final but this year feels different.

Bayern, on the other hand, have fired a warning shot that they mean business this season and the addition of Philippe Coutinho along with the emergence of Serge Gnarby, are all encouraging signs for the Bavarians.

Meanwhile, there was another less than convincing performance by Real Madrid as they had to come from behind to avoid an upset against Club Brugge, who earned a 2-2 draw at the Bernabeu.

Real were hammered 3-0 by PSG in the opening game of Group A, and could have a bit of work to do to reach the knockout stages. PSG picked up a narrow 1-0 win at Galatasaray and are now on course to cruise through as group winners.

Barca also came from behind to beat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Nou Camp, in what could turn out to be a crucial win in a very tough-looking group. Borussia Dortmund also won and are tied on four points with Barca, while Antonio Conte’s Inter has just one point and have it all to do.

Chelsea were one of the big winners of the week. It may have been a narrow 2-1 victory at Lille, but it was crucial three points and a perfect response after losing the opening game of the group at home to Valencia.

In the same group, Ajax are showing they mean business again and are no one-season wonders. They may have lost a number of key players from the side that went all the way to the semi-finals last year but the 3-0 victory at Valencia shows they will be a force to be reckoned with once again.

Juventus and Manchester City are both on course after picking up comfortable wins, while Liverpool had a scare against RB Salzburg before winning 4-3. All credit to the Austrian side though for fighting back from 3-0 down to draw level, and they look as though they could give the Reds and Napoli a run for their money in Group E.
