Chelsea turned down the chance to sign Lyon playmaker Nabil Fekir in the summer, according to the French club. The 25-year-old appeared to be on his way to Liverpool but the deal fell through at the last moment, leaving Lyon’s transfer plans for the summer in tatters.
They were clearly relying on the cash to fund their own squad rebuilding and their president Jean-Michel Aulas has now revealed they tried to strike up a deal with Chelsea.
However, the Blues had their sights on Jorginho, who eventually signed from Napoli, and Fekir remained with Lyon.
“In the beginning, when we thought about our summer transfer window and how to organise the future squad, we thought that he was practically gone,” Aulus said. “That’s why we have been able to adapt things.
“We spoke with Chelsea representatives, and they had no interest at all in him. From then on, we realised we could change our plans (as Nabil would stay).”
