Chelsea To Take Up Giroud Option

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says the club have agreed to extend Olivier Giroud’s contract by a further year.

The France international has struggled for game time this season, starting just seven Premier League games, and he said on Wednesday: “I am not happy to be the second striker.” Following the arrival of Gonzalo Higuain on loan in January he has been restricted to just six league appearances, and reports claim he has received offers from elsewhere.

His current deal with Chelsea is set to expire in the summer but Sarri insists the former Arsenal man is staying put after speaking with the board about activating a one-year extension.

Sarri told Sky Sports News: “He is sure, because the club has an option for another year, another season. “I spoke to the club two days ago and we agreed to exercise the option. “So, he will remain. “He cannot do anything, but I spoke with the club and I spoke with Marina [Granovskaia] two days ago and Olivier will remain with us and she didn’t say to me anything about this question.”
