Giorgio Chiellini says Juventus have achieved their first goal after booking their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League. Juve were made to work hard by Valencia in Turin but a 1-0 victory, which came after Mario Mandzukic fired home the winner, was enough to get the job done.
The Italian champions are one of the hot favourites to go all the way and win the Champions League, but Chiellini was just pleased to achieve the first aim and get through the group. “The first goal of the season has been reached,” he told Juventus’ website. “We knew that it would be a difficult game because Valencia are a dangerous team in the spaces. “In the first half we could do better, we got too enthusiastic, then we did well in the second [half] – the result is certainly deserved.”
The defender now says focus will switch back to the Serie A title race. “Now we turn the page and start thinking about the Champions [League] in February,” Chiellini added. “We have to concentrate on the championship because we have a good month ahead of us.”
