Sam Curran proved to be England’s saviour on day one of the fourth Test with India at the Ageas Bowl. England won the toss and chose to bat in Southampton but they were soon left regretting that decision as they fell to 86-6.
Fortunately Curran stepped up to the crease and showed real character as he led the recovery on a dramatic first day.
The Surrey left-hander put 78 on the board as he struck up strong partnerships with both Moeen Ali, who reached 40, and Stuart Broad.
Curran was the last man to be dismissed with England all out for 246 which left India with four overs to survive until the close of play.
The tourists reached 19-0 and trail by 227 as England’s bowlers look to try and level the playing field on Friday.
