Ajax star Frenkie De Jong has ‘liked’ a reference to Manchester City beating Manchester United, fuelling speculation he wants to join. Bosses at the Etihad are keen on signing the talented 21-year-old Netherlands international midfielder in January, with reports the Citizens are prepared to pay a fee of £65m to land him.
De Jong is also a target for Barcelona but has provided City fans with hope they might be leading the race following the dominating 3-1 victory against Jose Mourinho’s team, which also returned them to the top of the Premier League – two points clear of nearest challengers Liverpool.
Both the teenager and City are presently sponsored by Nike, who tweeted out after the result “the City is [email protected] City”, showing a picture of defender Kyle Walker jumping onto the backs of his celebrating team-mates.
De Jong shocked fans on social media by liking the snap on his Instagram, revealing his admiration for Pep Guardiola’s side and possibly hinting that he is open to making the move to Manchester.
It is understood City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, has held talks with Ajax counterpart Marc Overmars, with Guardiola identifying De Jong as the long-term successor to Brazil veteran Fernandinho.
